23. From Garage Business to Lobster Empire with Marc Worrall

Marc Worrall is the owner and president of New England Lobster Company, one of the most successful seafood companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. While working a finance job that he didn’t like, Marc and his college friend started the company in 1987 from his parent’s garage, shipping live lobster from Boston to San Francisco and finding people to purchase them.

After fifteen years serving a growing list of customers that included many of the Bay Area’s leading restaurants and retailers, they opened their doors to the general public in 2002 offering live, cooked, and frozen seafood from their new location in South San Francisco.

In October of 2011 they added a food truck and began serving our homemade lobster corn chowder, lobster, and crab rolls. One year later they opened a new retail seafood market and a casual New England-style eatery, growing their menu also to include lobster and Dungeness crab plates, rolls, salads, and a variety of creative seafood fare.

Marc’s story is a textbook entrepreneurial journey of overcoming obstacles and growing the business in a very measured and intentional way. He discussed what the day-to-day was like in those early years and why he believes that, if you’re considering starting a business, you should absolutely go for it.

In addition, the discussion included:

  • The one skill set every business owner MUST have
  • How starting small can be a huge advantage
  • How they were able to decrease expenses as orders increased
  • The art of taking calculated risks
